Dr Oscar Berglund

Lecturer in International Public and Social Policy

Oscar Berglund is Lecturer in International Public and Social Policy in the School for Policy Studies at the University of Bristol. He is a critical political economist with a focus on protest and contestation. Oscar’s current interests are around climate change activism. On the one hand, Oscar is interested in various ways in which climate activists seek to influence the responses to climate change at various levels, from lobbying politicians to organising civil disobedience campaigns and creating alternatives to current climate governance. On the other, he looks at how policymakers and society responds to different forms of climate activism.

Dr Jess Britton

Research Fellow, University of Exeter

Jess Britton is a Research Fellow in the Energy Policy Group at the University of Exeter working on the local governance needs for smart, flexible energy systems. Jess’ research is focussed on understanding the role of decentralised actors in achieving a net zero energy system, and how this relates to local, regional and national governance structures. This incorporates research on interactions between decentralised energy systems and political devolution, the role of local governments, as well as smart cities and how energy business models are changing. Her PhD examined the development of heat networks in the UK and Germany with an emphasis on the role of municipal utilities. She is currently an ESRC post-doctoral fellow and previous worked on the EPSRC project IGov (Innovation and Governance for future energy systems).

Dr David Shackleton

Lecturer in English Literature, Cardiff University

David Shackleton is a Lecturer in English Literature at Cardiff University. He is interested in the power of stories to shape our responses to climate change, and to the environmental emergency more generally. David’s current research project, called ‘Visions of the Future’, is a study of how writers and filmmakers imagine future climate-changed worlds. It also explores how scientists, policy-makers, and activists use narrative, storylines, and future scenarios to convey environmental risk, and to motivate people to take action.
